Common Questions

  • Is counseling for me?

Seeking out therapy is an individual choice. There are many reasons why people come to counseling. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one's life such as a divorce or work transition. Many seek the advice of counsel as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Working with a therapist can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges. Counseling can help address many types of issues including depression, anxiety, conflict, grief, stress management, body-image issues, and general life transitions. Therapy is right for anyone who is interested in getting the most out of their life by taking responsibility, creating greater self-awareness, and working towards change in their lives.

  • Do you offer telehealth counseling?

I provide both in-person and Telehealth sessions. Telehealth sessions are completed on a HIPAA compliant platform, much like Zoom. This is a great option for individuals who need to limit drive time, live outside of Birmingham but still in the state of Alabama . However, if you choose to utilize insurance, it is important to confirm with your insurance provider that Telemedicine is covered.

  • What should I expect at my first appointment?

The goal for our first appointment will be to build rapport and trust as well as helping me understand your reason for coming to counseling, the history of the problem, and the goals you’d like to accomplish. Your first appointment will typically last 50-60 minutes with your subsequent sessions lasting 45-50 minutes. Sessions are scheduled at a frequency to meet the client’s or couple’s individual needs.

  • How does payment work?

Clients can pay for sessions using private pay options or utilizing their insurance providers. I accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, PEEHIP, AllKids, Alabama Power, and EPS. It’s ultimately the client’s responsibility to ensure full payment of services, whether directly to the therapist or utilizing their insurance carriers. Please note I am not liable for checking and relaying each individual benefit prior to the first counseling appointment. You can retrieve this benefit information by calling the customer service line for mental health/behavioral health on the back of your insurance cared. A credit card is required to be on file for all clients to ensure prompt payment at time of service. If you would like to submit your sessions to insurance privately, I will be happy to supply you with a Super Bill.

  • Is counseling confidential?

As a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice, I must abide by my board’s laws and ethics. In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communication between a counselor and client. No information is disclosed without the prior written approval of the client. However, there are some exceptions required by the law to this rule.

    • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The counselor is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.

    • If a client was threatening serious bodily harm to another person. I would be required to notify the police and the intended party if possible.

    • If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The counselor will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, additional measures may need to be taken to ensure their safety if an individual does not cooperate.
